Hazardous Materials

Shelter in place for a Chemical Emergency.....

  • Go indoors and listen to local radio or TV for instructions

  • Close ALL windows and doors

  • Turn off heating, cooling or ventilation systems.  Close fireplace damper.

  • If eyes, nose or mouth become irritated, protect your breathing by covering your mouth with a damp cloth.  Take frequent shallow breaths and stay calm.

  • Tune to local emergency information stations.  Follow broadcast instructions.

  • Stay inside unless you are told you can leave.

  • If you are in a vehicle, close windows and turn off air systems.

Evacuation...................

If EVACUATION is ordered by authorities:

  • Stay calm

  • Gather what you and your family will need.  Take essentials such as medicine, baby supplies, drivers license, checkbook and credit cards

  • Lock your house

  • Keep windows and vents closed

  • Police officers along the route will direct you

Leaving your Home..............

Depending on the nature of the emergency, you may be asked to leave your home and go to a care center or a friend's or relative's home away from the hazard.

Your local radio and television stations will have special information about care centers (Red Cross).  You may also hear a public announcement made from an emergency vehicle driving through your neighborhood.  Sometimes emergency crews will go door to door telling people about the emergency and asking them to leave.

ALWAYS LISTEN CAREFULLY TO EMERGENCY INFORMATION AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!

What about School Children??????

  • Students will be cared for at the school until the emergency is over

  • School systems have emergency procedures in place for sheltering and evacuation

The Lake County HAZARDOUS MATERIALS PLAN is available in your local Library!
